Data Quality Campaign Welcomes Cruz, Herring, Pruitt to Board of Directors

WASHINGTON (November 1, 2018) – The Data Quality Campaign is pleased to announce the appointment of three new members to its Board of Directors. José Luis Cruz, president of the Herbert H. Lehman College of The City University of New York, Cassandra Herring, founder and CEO of the Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity, and Stephen Pruitt, president of the Southern Regional Education Board and former Kentucky state commissioner of education, will serve as the newest members of DQC’s board.

“Each of these new board members brings extensive knowledge of education – from K-12 to higher education, from school-level administration to state and national leadership,” said John Bailey, chairman of the Data Quality Campaign’s Board of Directors. “They have all demonstrated a deep commitment to shaping education through a focus on equity and innovation, as well as the importance of using education data to better the lives of students.”

DQC welcomes these distinguished members of their fields, who will bring their knowledge and expertise to the Board of Directors as they serve a three-year term:

José Luis Cruz

José Luis Cruz serves as the third president of the Herbert H. Lehman College of The City University of New York. Previously, President Cruz served as provost of California State University, Fullerton. He is a former vice president of Higher Education Policy and Practice at The Education Trust in Washington, D.C. and a former vice president of Student Affairs for the University of Puerto Rico system. He began his career as a faculty member in engineering at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, rising through the ranks and serving as chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and dean of Academic Affairs. President Cruz is a professor of physics in Lehman’s School of Natural and Social Sciences and serves on the board of directors of The Education Trust, the Institute for Higher Education Policy, the Regional Plan Association and the New York Botanical Garden. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers as well as a National Science Foundation Career Award recipient.

Cassandra Herring

Cassandra Herring is president and Chief Executive Officer of the Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity (BranchED), a national effort to maximize programming and drive innovation to prepare highly effective diverse educators for all learners. Prior to BranchED, Dr. Herring served as Dean of the School of Education and Human Development at Hampton University. Dr. Herring also conceptualized and launched Hampton U Online, the university’s virtual campus for the delivery of online degree programs and opened the Hampton University International Office, a hub for supporting international students and faculty, promoting study abroad, and building global connections. Dr. Herring has served on national and international boards, including serving as Chair of the HBCU Academic of Deans of Education Council and as a member of both Deans for Impact and the advisory board for The Jandris Center for Innovative Higher Education. She has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the international Online Learning Consortium and as a Salzburg Global Institute Fellow at Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg, Austria.

Stephen Pruitt

Stephen Pruitt serves as the sixth president of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). He started his education career as a high school chemistry teacher in Fayette County, Georgia. Before SREB, Pruitt was Kentucky’s state commissioner of education. At the national level, he worked closely with state agencies and educators around the country to improve policy and practice in science education. In Georgia, Pruitt served as science and mathematics program manager, director of academic standards, associate state superintendent for assessment and accountability and chief of staff for the Georgia Department of Education. Pruitt also served as a board member to the Council of Chief State School Officers, as president of the Council of State Science Supervisors and as a member of the writing team for the College Board Standards for College Success for science. In addition, he served on the National Academies of Science Committee on Conceptual Framework for New Science Education Standards that developed the Framework for K-12 Science Education.

Cruz, Herring and Pruitt replace longtime members former Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna, Lead Edge Capital’s Operating Partner Paul Bell, and former Council of Chief State School Officers Executive Director Chris Minnich.
