Policymakers across the country are seeking to better understand credentials of value—the education and training programs that help workers fill in-demand and growing jobs in their states. But right now, leaders are lacking the complete set of information they need to understand P–20W pathways and other important metrics like the return on state investments in education and training. Expanding unemployment insurance (UI) wage data by securely incorporating more information about workers can equip state leaders with a fuller picture of their workforce. By ensuring that statewide longitudinal data systems (SLDSs) include the most robust workforce data available, leaders will be able to gather and act on insights to improve their education-to-workforce pipelines, grow their economies, and support workers in securing family-sustaining careers. This resource makes the case for enhanced UI wage data, shares examples of states leading the way, explores challenges, and recommends actions state and federal leaders can take to drive UI wage data enhancements.
