Associate Director, Communications

The Data Quality Campaign (DQC) is a national nonprofit policy and advocacy organization that envisions a world where data policy is used to drive systemic change, economic mobility, and student success. DQC is leading the effort to bring every part of the education community together to empower educators, families, and policymakers with quality information to make decisions that ensure students excel.   1. Increase public understanding of the value of data in supporting the student journey through the P–20W pipeline (early education, K–12, postsecondary, and workforce).  
  2. Build the capacity of policy and education leaders to develop trust with communities to ensure data is used effectively.  
  3. Ensure that state leaders use the policy levers available to them across P–20W to make data work for students and communities.

Position Summary  

The Associate Director, Communications, works to shape and carry out DQC’s advocacy work through evidence-based communications strategies that increase the organization’s impact on the field. The Associate Director is a strong external advocate for the value of data to improve educational outcomes and DQC’s brand, eager to execute a clear and effective vision for translating policy ideas into impact through advocacy and communications. The Associate Director will work closely with DQC’s policy research, advocacy, and communications teams as they are intrinsically linked and interdependent.  

The Associate Director’s work strategically helps our organization answer these questions:  

  • How do we best communicate what DQC knows in ways that reach our audiences and inspire action?  
  • What stories need to be told about data policy and use, and how can DQC tell them in new ways?  
  • How do we help states and partners build trust with communities through better communication of data? 

To answer these questions, the Associate Director: 

  • Collaborates with other organizational leaders to design, oversee, and execute communications initiatives that support the organization’s mission.  
  • Works across DQC staff to support the creation and dissemination of tools, resources, and publications for a variety of stakeholders to showcase DQC’s research and recommendations. 
  • Builds and maintains relationships with partner organizations as well as state and national reporters.

Education and Other Experience:

  • DQC values both education and work experiences that demonstrate the ability to lead within the organization in the communications space. 
  • It is likely that someone will find success in a DQC Associate Director role with a minimum of 11 years of experience, which can include a combination of postsecondary education and full‐time, professional work experience. However, a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is required. 

What You’ll Do

  • Partner and collaborate with policy, advocacy, and communications leaders from across the organization to develop strategies to advance our agenda.  
  • Collaborate with the Director, Communications, to develop communications strategies that advance the organization’s primary goals. This work includes:  
  • Leading DQC’s editorial strategy, including key deliverables, the organization’s blog, and other materials. 
  • Overseeing the organization’s digital strategy, including social media engagement and the use of videos, graphics, DQC’s blog, and other media to advance DQC’s mission.  
  • Leading the development and dissemination of campaigns and public-facing resources that advance DQC’s agenda. 
  • Establish and maintain strategic relationships with key audiences, including:  
  • National policy, research, and advocacy organizations, including seeking strategic opportunities for collaboration and partnership to leverage partners’ expertise and disseminate DQC’s tools, resources, and publications. 
  • State and national media, working with DQC staff to provide prompt and informative responses to reporter requests as well as proactively pitching insights from the DQC team to relevant outlets.  
  • Work closely with the entire DQC staff to collaborate on ideas, provide feedback, and ask questions to guide communications strategy.  
  • Ensure that all internal and external DQC content reflects the level of care and attention we put into our work by managing copyediting, proofreading, and design processes. 
  • Write for important organizational communications, including executive thought leadership pieces.  
  • Represent the organization at conferences and events, and in communications initiatives with DQC’s audiences; prepare staff to present externally, including training in the form of professional development and talking points.   
  • Manage consultants as necessary to implement communications strategies. 
  • Travel occasionally for the organization. (Note: DQC travel is currently very light due to the COVID-19 pandemic.)  

Compensation, Benefits, and Hybrid/Flexible Work Environment 

  • Starting salary range of $80,000–$100,000, commensurate with qualifications.

  • We provide a hybrid work environment, which means all DC-area employees should plan to be in the office 1–2 days per week; however, the expectation is that staff should not be working in the office 100% of the time. If you are not based in the DC area, the expectation is that you will be in the DC office once per month for 1–3 days (DQC will cover travel expenses). We are flexible on working hours and genuinely care about the quality of your work more than the time of day you do it. We ask staff to be available for team meetings and collaboration via technology platforms. 
  • Note on Vaccine Policy: DQC has made the safety of our staff and our surrounding community a top priority. As a part of that commitment, DQC recently implemented a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy. This policy states that all DQC employees, interns, and fellows (i.e., DQC staff) are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. DQC will require selected candidates to submit proof of complete vaccination against COVID-19 prior to extending a job offer. If a candidate has a qualifying medical condition that contradicts a COVID-19 vaccination, a medical exemption form should be requested from Human Resources.
