About Data for Action

Data for Action (DFA) is a powerful tool to inform efforts in education to better use data in decision making. It is a series of analyses that highlight state progress and key priorities to promote the effective use of longitudinal data to improve student achievement. DFA annually measures the progress of all 50 states and the District of Columbia toward implementing the 10 State Actions to Ensure Effective Data Use and toward addressing other key policy issues.

The 2014 state analysis is DQC’s 10th annual survey of states. DQC invites each state’s governor’s office to participate in the survey. The governor’s office can appoint a designee to respond to the survey in collaboration with stakeholders. States answer a series of questions about each of the 10 State Actions as well as emerging data issues and promising practices in the field. DQC determines whether or not states receive credit for each Action based on states’ responses (see criteria document).
